At a recent Friday nature study, Redeemer Classical hosted the president of the Fort Wayne Artist’s Guild, John Kelty. He did a watercolors demonstration as he talked, showing the children how he paints outside (which artists call “plein air,” meaning painting outside in outdoor daylight).
Take a look at what happened in the pictures below. Click on any picture to enlarge and flip through as a sideshow.
Students watch Mr. Kelty unfold his equipment from his backpack and set up. Mr. Kelty shows the children how he mixes paints. Mr. Kelty wows the crowd by just throwing broad washes of paint all over his watercolor paper. Mr. Kelty pulled a nature studier out of his seat to add some color wash to the painting’s background. In front of the class, the two discuss this technique and how to do it. Mr. Kelty shows students some of his finished works, which are in galleries and art shows across the Midwest. Mr. Kelty puts the finishing touches on his painting while the children watch and give directions.
