We had a blast last week at our first volunteer work day. Our test run this week at decorative painting for the school hallway went well, too, so we’re just about ready to begin that work in earnest. Come join in the fun for the next set of opportunities to bring world-class education to Fort Wayne and 46807. Here’s what we’ve got on the calendar so far:
- Monday, June 26, 9:30 to noon. We have three main tasks for this volunteer opportunity: starting to paint the hallway; beginning to set up our school and community library by sorting, cataloguing, de-stickering, cleaning books; and putting together farm tables, stools, and other classroom furniture for students. Wear clothes that can get dirty or painted, unless you plan to help only with the library. If you have these items, bring them: Goo-Gone; paint rollers and trays; a Kreg (or other) jig; and a miter saw.
- Saturday, July 8, 9 a.m. to noon. This is a playground-focused work day, in which our first priority is putting up a suitable fence around the perimeter of the playground. Bring people with muscles who can dig holes and lug around fence posts! Folks not well-suited for such tasks can help protect our library’s rare books with the supplies that are slated to arrive by this time. We will give you a tutorial about how to do so. Wear clothes that can get dirty or painted, unless you plan to help only with the library.
- Monday, July 10, 7 to 9 p.m. Inside, we’ll have a ladies’-focused painting night out. Outside, we’ll have a men-focused night out for finishing up the fence and installing playground equipment like our outdoor music station and easels. Drinks will not be provided but also not turned down. Wear clothes that can get dirty or painted. If you have these items, bring them: paint rollers and trays; a Kreg (or other) jig; sanders; a brad nailer; a router; or a miter saw.
No need to RSVP — just show up! But letting us know in advance if you can bring tools will be helpful for planning. We could also use volunteers to help occupy the children our helpers often bring. Sometimes the kiddos help, sometimes they don’t, so anyone who would be happy to read and play with them would be welcome. We’re excited to see you and see the school come together!
